LFE’s Learner of the Term award celebrates students who have made excellent academic progress and a positive contribution at their respective FCCs. The winner receives a £200 Amazon voucher, while the runner-up receives a £40 voucher.

July Winner – Alfie Archibald (Carlisle United)

Carlisle United’s Alfie Archibald is the winner of LFE’s Learner of the Term award for April to July.

Jack Stephenson, Education Officer at the Cumbria club, explains why he believes Alfie is a deserving winner of the award.

“Alfie deserves recognition for the outstanding commitment, dedication, and professionalism he has demonstrated throughout his first year on the programme,” Stephenson told LFE.

“He is on track to achieve an exceptional overall grade profile of DDD*, reflecting the consistently high standards he has maintained across all areas of his studies.

“From the very beginning of the academic year, he set the tone with his enthusiasm, positive attitude, and determination to succeed. What has particularly impressed me is the quality of his academic work, consistently producing assignments to an exemplary standard and demonstrating excellent subject knowledge, attention to detail, and a genuine desire to achieve the best grades possible.

“Beyond the classroom, Alfie has been an excellent ambassador for both the programme and the club. During his work experience placements, including coaching at soccer camps and supporting community events, he demonstrated outstanding enthusiasm, reliability, and professionalism.”

“What makes Alfie particularly deserving of this award is the consistency of his efforts. Whether in the classroom, on placement, or on the football pitch, he approaches every opportunity with maturity, humility, and a determination to succeed. He has maintained exceptionally high standards throughout the year and continues to push himself to improve. He is a positive role model for his peers, embraces every opportunity presented to him, and represents the values of the college in an exemplary manner.

“For his outstanding academic achievements, exemplary-quality coursework, commitment to enrichment opportunities, contribution to college life, and consistently positive attitude, I cannot think of a more deserving recipient for the Learner of the Term award than Alfie.”

Runner-up – Conner-Lee Downing (Wigan Athletic)

Wigan Athletic’s Conner-Lee Downing is the runner-up for this award.

Phil Corrigan, Football and Education Manager at the Latics, spoke of Conner’s exceptional achievements on the programme.

“Conner has been an exceptional student throughout this term and the entire academic year. From the outset, he has consistently demonstrated an excellent understanding of the course content and approached every lesson with a positive attitude, enthusiasm, and a genuine willingness to learn.

“He has applied himself fully to all aspects of the course, producing work of an exceptionally high standard and completing every assignment with care, accuracy, and attention to detail. His commitment to achieving his best has been evident in everything he has done, and he has maintained these high standards consistently throughout the year.

“One of Conner’s greatest strengths is his dedication to his studies. He is highly organised, manages his workload effectively, and consistently meets deadlines. He takes great pride in the quality of his work and is always willing to challenge himself in pursuit of the best possible outcomes. His excellent work ethic and determination have enabled him to make outstanding progress and achieve consistently high results across the course.

“In addition to his academic success, Conner has shown significant personal growth throughout the year. He has developed into an increasingly confident and independent learner who is keen to contribute to class discussions, share his ideas, and support those around him. It has been particularly pleasing to see his confidence continue to grow, allowing him to engage even more fully in lessons and make the most of every learning opportunity.

“Conner is also an excellent role model within the classroom. He is consistently polite, respectful, and courteous towards both staff and his peers, demonstrating maturity and professionalism in all that he does. He works exceptionally well with others, contributes positively to the learning environment, and is always considerate of those around him. His positive attitude, reliability, and respectful manner make him a valued and highly respected member of the class.

“Overall, Conner has enjoyed an outstanding academic year and should be extremely proud of everything he has achieved. His dedication, perseverance, positive attitude, and commitment to producing high-quality work have been exemplary throughout. It has been a pleasure to teach Conner this year, and I have no doubt that he will continue to build on his success and excel in his future studies.”
